Why Vintage Will Always Have a Place in My Wardrobe

Vintage fashion has been one of my long-standing loves - a style that not only brings character to my wardrobe but also offers a unique edge that current trends can’t replicate. It’s a way to reinterpret what’s trending today with pieces no one else will have. That said, I know that vintage shopping can seem a bit daunting. Racks packed with quirky clothes, items that might be a little worn (and sometimes smelly!), and figuring out sizes that don’t always fit the standard - there’s a lot to navigate.

But don’t worry, I’ve learned a thing or two about vintage shopping over the years. Here are my top tips to help you dive into the vintage world with confidence:

1. Keep an Open Mind
One of the best parts about vintage shopping is discovering something unexpected. Don’t go in with a strict focus like "I’m only looking for trousers today." Let the pieces come to you - you might just find an amazing jacket, a retro dress, or a unique accessory you weren’t even thinking about.

2. Know What Works for You
Vintage is a great space to experiment with colours, textures, and styles that you wouldn’t normally wear. However, stay mindful of what you’ll actually get use out of. It’s tempting to go all-in on something wildly different, but make sure it fits into your overall wardrobe and style.

3. Bring a Friend
Shopping vintage is an adventure, and trying things on is a must - so why not make it a fun experience? Having a friend along not only makes the day more enjoyable but also gives you a second pair of eyes for those honest opinions when deciding whether something is a yes or a no.

4. Take Your Time
Vintage shopping isn’t something to rush through. Sifting through the racks takes patience, and it’s totally worth the effort. Give yourself time to explore and try things on - it’s part of the journey to finding those hidden gems that will become your favorite pieces.

5. Know the Value
One thing to keep in mind is the pricing of vintage items. Sometimes, certain stores or sellers might mark up prices higher than they should be. It’s good to have a sense of the value of what you’re buying - recognising when an item is overpriced will save you from overpaying.

Bonus Tip: Buy Out of Season
Vintage shopping is all about timing, and sometimes the best finds pop up out of season. Don’t shy away from grabbing that incredible coat in the middle of summer - you never know what treasures will reveal themselves!
